One conversation. One real report. Zero shame.
For families who walked out of the last meeting smiling, got to the car, and thought, wait, what did I just agree to?
Does any of this sound a little too familiar?
Over the years, I have been collecting the things parents say to me right after the meeting ends, when the polite voice drops and the real one shows up. So, see if any of these land:
If you read those and felt a little seen, you are in the right place. And for the record, your reaction is information, not a flaw.
You do not have an information problem. You have a map problem.
By now you have probably read a hundred articles, joined three Facebook groups, watched a webinar at 11pm, and saved a folder full of PDFs you swear you will get to. The IDEA basics feel familiar. FAPE vocabulary has started to roll off the tongue. In fact, you can probably spell procedural safeguards in your sleep.
And yet the meetings keep ending the same way.
That is not a you problem. Instead, it is what happens when the system hands a family a stack of evaluations, a room full of opinions, a calendar full of acronyms, and absolutely no map for what to actually do next.
Indeed, every parent I have ever worked with said some version of the same thing on the first call: “I just need someone to tell me what is actually happening here.”
Ultimately, that is the gap Catalyst was built to close.
30 focused minutes with me. One written report. One clear next step.
In short, Catalyst is the SOAR strategy session for families who do not need a year-long engagement yet. Instead, you need someone who has sat at a lot of tables, who knows what to listen for, and who will hand you a written summary you can actually open back up in three weeks when the school sends a new email and your stomach drops.
No lectures. Also no shame about what you have or have not done. Just clarity, on paper, in plain language, with you fully in the driver seat.
Here is exactly what you get
- First, a 30-minute focused conversation where I listen and ask the questions the team has not asked yet.
- Then, timeline mapping so we can see the patterns, the triggers, what has actually helped, and what only looked like it was helping.
- Next, root cause analysis instead of surface labels. Together we move past the headline behavior and ask what your child is communicating underneath it.
- After that, a short term stabilization plan you can put to use this week. Not a 40-page binder. Instead, two or three real moves you can make right now.
- Finally, a written summary, delivered within 5 business days, with recommendations you can re-read, share with your partner, and bring back to me later.
What you will actually walk away with
Language
Phrases you can use in your next email, in the next meeting, and on the next phone call that sound calm, curious, and a little harder to brush off.
Priorities
A short list of the two or three things that actually matter right now. Not the twenty you have been quietly carrying.
A read on the room
Also, an honest sense of where you are in the process, what tends to come next from here, and what you do and do not have to be ready for.
The written report
So when the next email lands and your brain goes blank, you have your own notes from someone who has actually been in rooms like yours.
Is Catalyst the right move for you?
Catalyst is for you if
- You feel somewhere between “the meetings are getting tense” and “I do not even know what to ask anymore.”
- A second pair of eyes sounds welcome, especially from someone who is not going to shame you for what you do not know yet.
- Although a long engagement is not the right move yet, a clear next step would change everything.
- Something in writing would help, so you can come back to it later without rebuilding the whole story from scratch.
- By now you have noticed that being polite and prepared has not been quite enough on its own.
Catalyst is not for you if
- Looking for someone to tell you the school is the villain and you are the hero? In short, that is not what happens here.
- If you need legal representation, look elsewhere. After all, I am a non-attorney educational advocate, not a lawyer.
- A 24-hour turnaround on the report will not happen. Although thorough, mine arrives within 5 business days for a reason.
- One magic phrase to fix every meeting forever does not exist. Spoiler, none of us has one.
You will not be the most prepared person in the room by accident.
After all, every family I work with starts somewhere. The shame story you have been carrying about being “behind” or “too late” or “not the right kind of parent for this” is not going to come into this session with us. Honestly, we do not work that way.
In fact, you belong in your child’s education conversation by right, not by performance. So Catalyst is 30 minutes and one report toward acting like it.
Things families ask before booking
First things first
What is Catalyst, in one sentence?
In short, a 30-minute strategy session with me, plus a written summary delivered within 5 business days, designed for families who need expert clarity before deciding on a bigger engagement.
What does the written report actually look like?
It is a plain language document with your timeline mapped out, the patterns and root causes we identified, your short term stabilization plan, and prioritized recommendations. Also, it is written so you can hand it to your partner, your therapist, or future me without having to re-explain anything.
How is this different from the $5 discovery call?
The $5 call is a short conversation to figure out which SOAR service is the right one for you. In contrast, Catalyst is the actual strategy work. So if you already know the broad strokes of what is happening and you want a real timeline, a real plan, and something in writing, you can skip the discovery step and start here.
Legal stuff, plainly
Is this legal advice?
No. I am a non-attorney educational advocate. The guidance I offer is built on professional training and lived experience working inside special education systems, and our work together does not create an attorney-client relationship. However, when legal counsel is the right next move, I will tell you that, and I will help you find it.
Will you tell me to file a complaint?
Only if that is actually what the situation calls for. Most of the families who come to Catalyst do not need to file anything. They need to know what is happening, what the school is and is not doing, and what the calm, clear next move is. In other words, filing is one tool. It is rarely the first one.
Logistics and what comes next
I do not live in Florida. Can we still work together?
Yes. IDEA is federal law, so the protections that matter are the same in all 50 states. Catalyst sessions are virtual. In fact, families I work with are spread across the country.
What if I am Black, or from another community that gets read wrong in these rooms?
You are exactly the family this practice was built to walk with. In fact, the intersection of race and disability in education is not a footnote in how I do this work. Instead, it is a starting point. So you will not have to translate yourself, perform, or pre-defend your tone here.
What if I want to keep working with you after?
If after the session you decide you want ongoing support, your $97 carries forward as credit toward the SOAR service that fits where you actually are. On the other hand, if you decide you have what you need for now, that is a completely respectable outcome and you keep the report.
You already know something needs to change.
Ultimately, you do not have to keep carrying this alone, and you do not have to commit to a year of advocacy to get a clear read on what is happening. One conversation. One report. So, that is the whole offer.
Latina Nickelson, M.Ed., is a non-attorney educational advocate. The guidance and support provided through Catalyst is based on professional training and lived experience navigating special education systems, not legal advice, and does not create an attorney-client relationship. Serving families in all 50 states virtually.
