What is a Special Education Advocate & IEP Coach

A special education advocate or IEP coach partners with families of children with disabilities, providing guidance and support to make sure the child receives the best possible educational plan and services.

What is the difference between a special education advocate and a special education attorney?

Think of an advocate as your guide through the special education system. They know the rules, understand how to create a strong plan for your child, and can help you communicate effectively with the school. Attorneys are for when things get legally complicated. If you need formal hearings or might end up in court, that’s when you bring in a special education attorney.

When should you seek out an advocate?

If you’re feeling lost in the special education process, having trouble getting the school to understand your child’s needs, or just want some extra support, an advocate can be a huge help.

What are some “red flags” when hiring an advocate?

Be wary of anyone promising guaranteed results – special education is about collaboration. Avoid advocates who seem pressuring or more interested in fighting the school than finding the best solution for your child.

What questions should I ask before hiring an advocate?

Understand exactly what services they offer, such as attending meetings, helping with paperwork, etc. Ask about their experience working with children similar to yours, and be upfront about discussing their fees.

How long can a special education case take?

This is tough to answer because every case is unique. A good advocate will always try to find solutions with your school district before things get too formal. But, if you end up needing mediation or going further, things can get complicated and take longer. There are steps in place to help you reach an agreement without crazy legal fees. Ideally, you and the district can find common ground in a few months, but if things get difficult, the timeline can stretch out.

How much does it cost?

I believe every family deserves support, regardless of budget. That’s why I offer a free consultation to get us started. After we chat, I’ll provide a menu of services with costs for each level. I also offer payment plans to make things easier. Let’s not let finances be a barrier to getting your child the help they need.
